KT Gwanghwamun West Building

Design
Introduction
This past March, young people from around the world turned their attention to the KT Gwanghwamun West Building. The BTS performance staged in front of the KT West Building, along with the media façade announcing it, drew significant attention. The KT Gwanghwamun West Building remodeling project began with winning the design competition in March 2020 and received its certificate of use approval in April 2025. While the building stands as a symbol of KT’s history, it had aged for more than 35 years and required comprehensive renovation. Because its telecommunications infrastructure had to remain in operation, full reconstruction was not an option, and remodeling became the only viable path forward. Through the remodeling, the KT West Building was reborn as the most prominently recognized structure facing Gwanghwamun Square, maximizing its visibility and symbolic value, and emerging as a landmark representing Sejong-daero. The top priority was to maintain the essential functions of the existing facilities while dramatically enhancing the building’s overall performance. Internal spaces were reconfigured to maximize work efficiency and spatial utilization, and a bold plan was implemented to convert the distributed core system into a centralized core. This enabled free and flexible floor plan compositions, realizing a workspace that functions as a “Human Platform” responsive to diverse user needs. Furthermore, the spatial and circulation plan connecting the KT EAST Building, KT West Building, and Gwanghwamun Square forms a “Culture Platform” where people and culture come together. The BTS performance held this past March is one such example. The KT West Building has now become a cultural hub not only for Korea but for the world. With KT’s technological capabilities added, this integrated platform-combining ICT and AI technologies-is establishing itself as a global symbol of culture and technology.
