Introduction
LG U+ Pyeongchon 2nd Center, designed by Heerim following a design competition win in May 2020, was completed in October 2023 after approximately 30 months of construction. The new center is LG U+'s second large-scale data center, following the Pyeongchon Mega Center which began operations in 2015. With 9 floors above ground, 3 basement floors, and a total floor area of 40,450㎡, it can accommodate approximately 200,000 servers. Pyeongchon 2nd Center prioritizes essential elements such as temperature control, security, and uninterruptible power supply. Designed with customer needs in mind, LG U+'s own cooling technology directly supplies cold air to servers and increases cooling air volume for efficient heat management. To meet customer security concerns, office and computer rooms are separated, and a five-tier security system safeguards the center entrance to the computer room. Real-time monitoring of equipment and network status allows operational status to be shared with client companies, enabling them to effectively manage their servers. Surpassing the capacity of the previous Pyeongchon Mega Center, it provides a 100% uninterrupted computing environment service to client companies through a Tier-IV level dual power and cooling system configuration. Additionally, when the outside temperature is below 24 degrees, the center directly utilizes outside air and strengthens its enhanced insulation performance with a 6.9-meter ceiling height to achieve a dramatic reduction in cooling energy consumption exceeding 50% compared to existing centers. The center further promotes sustainability through increased use of renewable energy sources including geothermal heating and cooling for office buildings, solar power and fuel cells for reduced power consumption, and water usage monitoring and optimization for cooling and humidification. By actively implementing ESG-based energy-saving solutions, LG U+ Pyeongchon 2nd Center is expected to become a leader in the eco-friendly IDC trend.
